Batu Karas – 11th-16th June
Batu Karas has definitely got to be in the top five of my favourite places in Indonesia. I came here in 2006 and 2007 on the first two of the surf kayak trips with the boys and had always wanted to come back – 12 hours in a bus from the nearest airport makes it a bit impracitcal for the standard two week vacation from work, but that’s all changed now; the local airport has reopened so there’s not really any excuse.
A really chilled atmosphere, a nice gentle surf break that has apparently been listed as one of the top five places to learn to surf in the world and super nice people make it a place I could easily spend another month.
It was great to catch up with Nik and Paul who run Java Cove Beach Hotel (we had bumped into Nik in Ubud a few months beforehand) and spend five days getting better at surfing (longboarding is very, very cool).
We also made the neccessary trip to Ibu Ade’s for the best Makanan Padang of our time in Indo and for the magical swim in Green Canyon.
Thanks heaps to Nik and Paul for looking after us and for your words of encouragement – we’ll definitely see you again.
